Governors

Becoming a Governor of Bohunt is a fantastic way to give something back to the school community – its students, staff, parents and the wider community. Governors have a significant role in the long-term development and improvement of the school and provide strong links with the wider community.

They provide support for the Headteacher, teaching and support staff. You would be expected to attend regular meetings and contribute to the behind-the-scenes decision-making and planning at Bohunt. If you are interested in becoming a Governor at Bohunt, please let us know by email governors@bohuntworthing.co.uk.

We currently operate as a single, full governing body without sub committees. Meeting dates and our articles of governance can be seen by following the links below:

About Our Governors

John Apsey – Chair of Governors

My family moved to Worthing when I was 2 years old and I attended Homefield Primary School, Worthing High School for Boys and St John’s College Cambridge.

I worked in Industry for a few years and then started teaching in Ashford, Coleshill and Crawley where I was an Assistant Headteacher. I am currently Chair of examiners for A Level Chemistry with Pearson. We returned to Worthing in 1984 and our three children attended The Vale, Durrington High School and Worthing College.

We now have two grandsons in years 7 and 10 at Bohunt.

Vivien Makovik – Vice Chair / Parent Governor – Safeguarding & SMSC

We have 3 teenage children, the younger two are both at Bohunt. What attracted us to the school (and the Trust) when it first opened was the dynamic approach to education and we’re impressed with the high standards the school sets itself. As a governor I can help ensure these high standards are being met.

My husband and I have been running our own business for the past 10 years. I’m the youth leader in our local church and my hobbies include anything involving fabric or wool. I like cooking and I wage a constant battle with the house being a mess! I was bought up in Worthing, I met my Ukrainian husband in Burgess Hill and we lived in Kiev for 3 years when we were first married.

Paul Jarvis, Community Governor – H&S and Trips

After working for over 30 years in the financial sector and always working away from home, I felt I had provided very little to my local community. As Community Governor of Bohunt school, Worthing, I have a chance to change that and really support the local community through this role. I am also able to bring my financial and operational management experience, as well as Health & Safety knowledge to the Governing body. My current role as a School Business & Operations Manager, also enables me to have key insights that can support, as well as challenge the direction and implementation of the school.

Sally Nowak – Community Governor – SEN & Pupil Premium (PP)

I have been involved with schools, both primary and secondary, for more than 30 years as a Language teacher and most recently as a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator in a secondary school in Portsmouth.  I was a Governor for over 15 years at my children’s’ primary school in Worthing, initially as a parent governor and then as a co-opted governor, chairing the Staffing and Finance Committees.

I believe that all children should have access to a broad and balanced curriculum and that, that curriculum, should be appropriate to the individual student’s need and ability.

Jamie Stapleton – Community Governor

I joined the board of governors for Bohunt Secondary School early 2018. I come to Bohunt to help to assist and advise in strategies that maximise STEM topic participation and achievement, with a view to fostering and nurturing the next generation of engineers, scientists and inventors.

I bring to Bohunt my professional experience in STEM topics from working for high tech/engineering companies for the last 20 years. My career has spanned technical hands-on roles, marketing roles, and for the last 5 years in business leadership positions. I have a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Sussex.

I live in Lancing, married with two children.

Phil Harding – Staff Governor (Head of Mathematics)

I studied Mechanical Engineering and Business Management at the University of Sussex and after graduating spent the next fifteen years working in the recruitment industry, both in the UK and Internationally. I retrained as a teacher eight years ago and was among the first five teachers to join Bohunt School Worthing, a term prior to opening in our temporary site on Queens Street. I have always enjoyed being a part of our collegiate and supportive team, whilst watching it grow, over the past three years and it is a privilege to represent them on the Governing Body.

David Potter – Staff Governor (Premises Manager)

I joined Bohunt School Worthing as the Premises Manager from the beginning when we were based in the Queen Street car park. It is a pleasure to be part of a team that is shaping the future of BSW as well as the students who will pass through our doors over time. I enjoy being part of our strong and supportive team which is therefore why it’s a real privilege to represent them on the Governing Body and to be a part of the process of making our amazing school even better.
