Work Taster Day (Year 8)

Process

  • Students will be briefed in tutor time in the Spring Term
  • Parents/carers will be emailed a form so they can indicate where their child will be working and the name of the adult who will assume duty of care (usually a family member or family friend)
    • If the form doesn’t open or work for you, simply email the careers lead with the placement details and we will add them on manually
  • If you cannot find a placement or it is not suitable for your child to work with you, they will be set a Virtual Work Experience on Unifrog
  • The school will review placements and address any concerns
  • Virtual WEX links will be sent via Unifrog a few days before, but students can access this via their Unifrog account at any time
  • On the day, students will attend work with their parent/carer
  • After the day, students will review on Unifrog in tutor time

Please note

  • We can only accommodate placements on this specific day
  • Most employers will allow a student for 1-day if they are with an adult assuming duty of care (e.g. a parent). Ask your HR team, if in doubt.

It is unusual for employers to say no to these placements, as the student will be shadowing a parent/carer with duty of care. The young person would likely be classed as a visitor and covered under the employer’s insurance (public liability) or as a volunteer (employer insurance).

If they cannot work directly with you (e.g. you are in construction or a medical role), is there an adjacent role they could do? Could they work in the office or with the foreman? If not (and if there are no other family/friend options), just log them to do virtual and we’ll make sure they are sorted with activities to do at home on the day.

Students do not have to have an aspirational placement linked to their career ambitions – the primary aim is to gain experience of going to work for a day and the skills associated with this.
