Students at Bohunt School in Worthing have today received their GCSE results, enabling them to embark on the next chapter of their education.
Staff and students joined together to celebrate the many achievements, at the end of what has been a challenging year in light of COVID-19 and the cancellation of examinations.
Despite this, Bohunt School Worthing which is part of the high-achieving Bohunt Education Trust (BET), has continued to perform highly, with some of the individual success stories including:
Micah Lavadia, going to study Maths, Chemistry and Biology at Bhasvic said ‘My first thought was “wow!”, I am still in shock and didn’t think I’d do this well. My parents will be really happy to know I’m in the top 3% of students in the country’.
Lily Chow, going to study Environmental Science, Maths and Textiles at Bhasvic said ‘I have done so much better than expected and I’m just Iooking forward to celebrating!’
Other top performers were: Will Dootson, Tobin Hamilton, Emma Hill and Finlay Macdonald who all achieved 10 GCSEs, mainly at grades 9 with 8s, whilst Toby Ellwood, Lydia Rand and Reuben Walden achieved 10 GCSEs at grades 9 to 7.
Other students to be celebrated were Danielle Young, Ollie Kearnon-Caister and Hannah Zammit whose GCSE grades represented outstanding progress in their studies.
Danielle Young, going to study Biology, Chemistry and Science at Bhasvic said, ‘I plan to go into veterinary medicine and my work experience was cancelled due to Covid, I have wanted to do this since I was four years old. And I am so excited to just see people again!’
Henry Andrews achieved 11 GCSEs in total, undertaking an additional GCSE Dance qualification through school in his own time, for which he was awarded a Grade 9.
Bohunt School Worthing, which opened in 2015, has from the beginning integrated technology into both traditional and innovative teaching methods. Students have always had access to iPads to enhance their learning both at school and at home. This has enabled teachers and students to continue high quality education during the restrictions that have been in place over the last two years. The priority throughout has been to ensure that students have been able to study, learn and continue to plan for their future with the same ambition and determination as previous cohorts.
As well as focusing on their studies, this cohort of students has taken part in school-wide initiatives over the last eighteen months, such as making face masks for the NHS, food parcel deliveries and raising money for local charities. These have supported those in need within our community and wider afield demonstrating the ‘game-changer’ characteristics the School values so highly. In addition, a number of students returned voluntarily to work alongside staff at the start of the holidays, supporting our summer school – which has helped many of our newest cohort, who will join in September, make the best possible transition from primary school.

Everybody has come together to deal collaboratively with the challenge of COVID-19 and our students have learnt a lot about themselves and their potential. It will be exciting to see them take their important next steps and follow their future achievements.”

Due to COVID-19 and the cancellation of examinations, young people’s grades have been determined by teachers, based on work students produced throughout their course, in line with Government guidance. These grades were then moderated and assessed by external exam boards which awarded the final grades.
We were delighted to welcome our Y11 students back on site and it was wonderful to see so many happy faces and celebratory reactions, here’s a snapshot of the happy day:
