3 Point Subject Intent

• Autonomous learners are able to independently adapt and exploit a variety of skills, both practical and critical. 
• Resilient students will be confident to take risks and comfortable with ambiguity whilst experimenting with visual language.
• Thinking critically and creatively when responding to an awakened understanding of the world through an appreciation of art and culture.

Curriculum

Y7 – Exploring Art

• Students join us in Y7 with varied levels of experience of Art in KS2. We teach them the transferable skills they learn by studying Art. They start by Exploring Art through the investigation of Colour and the Formal Elements
• Music and Art – Students study the work of Wassily Kandinsky, Explore abstract art and learn some fundamental watercolour & compositional skills.
• The Art of Benin – Students explore art through an investigation into cultural influences and their effect upon visual language exploring the Benin Bronzes and experimenting with printmaking.

Y8 – Developing

• World Appreciation – Developing personal visual language through creative responses to world events, issues or innovations. Students build upon the exploration of foundation skills in observation using formal elements, developing a broader range of techniques and media. Students explore artists such as Shepher Fairey and Banksy and have the opportunity to design their own piece of protest art.
• Sculpture – Developing a wider repertoire of practical skills in 3-dimensional media. Students build upon built knowledge of the formal elements but interpret them in a three-dimensional way.  Students learn about the difference between Gargoyles and Grotesques. The project ends with students learning how to construct their own gargoyle out of clay.

Y9 – A Foundation Year – Enriching

• Enriching skill level and diversity of techniques and use of media whilst considering how to exploit the formal elements explored and developed in years 7 and 8.
• Contextual awareness is built from a foundation of knowledge introduced in year 7 and 8.
• More contemporary sources are introduced and used for the student to widen their repertoire of styles, media and techniques when developing ideas in a more meaningful and informed and individual way.

Y 10 – Refining

• An emphasis on refining skills, techniques and influences is introduced and explored during year 9. Identifying strengths in media specialisms and building independence when developing ideas and creating outcomes.

Y 11 – Implementing

• Mock Exam Unit – Implementing attained skills and knowledge from year 10, much more independently. Students will work in specialisms with media and techniques identified as strengths during year 10.
• AQA Externally Set Task – Implementing attained skills and knowledge independently on themed units set by AQA.
