Curriculum

Y7

• In Year 7 students learn about the people who lived in Britain before 1066, the Norman Conquest, the influence of religion on medieval society, the Crusades, the Magna Carta, the English Reformation and the English Civil War.
• Students learn how to apply key subject skills such as chronological understanding, cause and consequence and source analysis.
• Throughout Years 7-11 students are taught to consider the impact of past events on the world of today and to examine how different groups within society have been affected by and influenced key historical events.

Y8

• In Year 8 students learn about topics ranging from the industrial revolution, the British Empire, the women’s suffrage movement and the First and Second World Wars to the Civil Rights Movement and the impact of 9/11 on the global politics of today.
• Students build upon the skills learnt in Year 7 and learn how to apply subject skills such as change and continuity and significance.

Y9

• In Year 9 students begin their History GCSE by studying the Changes in Health and Medicine in Britain C500AD – present day topic.
• Students then go on to study the Development of Germany 1919-1991 topic.
• Students continue to develop the key subject skills they learnt in Years 7-8 whilst learning how to apply skills such as historical interpretations, and evidential understanding.

Y10

• In Year 10 students benefit from a comprehensive teaching of twentieth century history as they continue learning about the development of Germany 1919-1991 and then study the USA 1910-1929 : a Nation of Contrasts topic.
• In Year 10 students have the opportunity to visit the Imperial War Museum London and go on a four day residential trip to Berlin.

Y11

• In Year 11 students learn about Tudor history in depth as they study the reign of Elizabeth I. They then complete a historic environment case study for the Medicine c500AD – present topic (the subject focus changes every two years).
• Students then embark on a structured programme of History GCSE revision which focuses on both subject knowledge and exam technique mastery.
