Mathematics provides pupils with uniquely powerful ways to describe, analyse and understand the world. It can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder for all pupils when they solve a problem for the first time, discover a more elegant solution, or notice hidden connections. Pupils who are functional in mathematics are able to think independently in applied and abstract ways, and can reason, solve problems and assess risk. 

Mathematics is a creative subject. The language of mathematics is international. The subject can break cultural boundaries and its importance is universally accepted by employers, business leaders and innovators. Mathematics has developed over time as a means of solving problems and also as a form of communication. 

Staff at Bohunt aim to give students confidence in their mathematical ability and we also encourage them to enjoy their lessons. Being good at Maths and wanting to do Maths is something to be proud of at Bohunt. 

Key Stage 3 

Pupils are taught in a mixed ability setting in year 7 and streamed according to ability throughout Years 8 and 9. Pupils are taught topics around the five strands of Mathematics; number, shape and measure, ratio, algebra and handling data. This forms the foundations which are built upon to help students succeed with their GCSEs.

Key Stage 4 

At KS4 all students complete the GCSE Mathematics course. Students are set based on their KS3 performance and KS2 data. Pupils will study either the Higher or Foundation course. These 

are decided at the start of Year 10 to give students the best chance of achieving their target grade, however, there is flexibility to move this later on to suit student’s needs. 

Both the Foundation and Higher course allow students to develop their mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding of concepts including number, geometry, statistics and probability, measures and algebra. 

As well as the GCSE Mathematics, we also offer opportunities to take the Further Maths Qualification. These are aimed at students who have a high degree of competency in Mathematics and stand as separate qualifications to the GCSE Mathematics. 

Further Maths will be examined at the end of Year and gives high achieving students an introduction to AS level maths and allows them to develop their skills in algebra, geometry, trigonometry and problem solving techniques whilst also introducing new topics like calculus and matrices. This will support students who wish to take Maths or Further Maths as an A-Level.
