The Physical Education programme is designed to support, contribute to and complement the overall aims of the school. The department aims to provide an enjoyable, challenging and balanced programme, giving all students the opportunity to learn and develop new skills, experience a variety activities which require promote problem-solving skills and leadership and to develop their knowledge of human anatomy and health and fitness.
The promotion of an active lifestyle and enjoyment in PE and sport for pupils is considered to be of great importance. At KS3 we aim to give students an opportunity to develop their knowledge and experience by exploring a wide range of activities and sports. The digital curriculum further allows us to explore physical education and sport in greater detail providing the opportunities for students to experience roles of sports analysts, officials and coaches.
The department aims for the development of self-confidence and self-esteem through challenging, differentiated schemes of work, to encourage pupils to work together in a spirit of cooperation and to appreciate and respect strengths and weaknesses in self and others. A variety of teaching styles will allow for individual, paired and group work and will encourage pupil involvement in the planning of their own learning.
At KS4 students have the option to study Physical Education courses. Within GCSE PE students will follow a three year curriculum plan studying the AQA specification. The course is 60% theory and 40% practical (1 team sport, 1 individual sport and 1 from either). Students will have 5 lessons over a two week timetable (three theory lessons and two practical lessons). Within the theory elements students will study various topics in Physical Education to prepare them for two examination papers in the Summer of Year 11. These include:
Paper 1:
Paper 2:
Year 9 students can also opt to study OCR Sports Studies as one of their option choices. This is a more vocational course using a range of assessment methods, including practical assessments, coursework, witness statements and 1 exam. Topics include:

It is intended that the programme offered, together with an appreciation of the leisure and sports opportunities available within the local community will develop in pupils a desire to continue to lead a healthy active lifestyle after they have left the school.
The teaching programme and teaching styles used within the department allow for differentiation so that the needs of pupils of all abilities can be fully met. In addition to this, a full programme of co-curricular activities encourages the development of pupil potential to the highest degree.
We are extremely proud of our co-curricular programme which offers opportunities to participate for enjoyment or to further develop skills in individual and team activities. There are a wide range of extra-curricular clubs that run from Monday-Friday all throughout the year; pupils are encouraged to attend clubs to further skills and enjoyment in sport. In addition to clubs, there are also further opportunities for students to participate in fixtures against other local schools in District, County and National competitions. We are extremely proud of our commitment to these and have seen success grow as the school has reached full capacity.
